WANDERING WONDERS: THAMES & HUDSON USA’S THE GASTON LOUIS VUITTON COLLECTION

We love a curated collection, don’t you? We also love that a collector since his childhood, Gaston-Louis Vuitton (1883-1970) accumulated thousands of objects over his lifetime. His wide-ranging interests and voracious curiosity were intimately bound up with the future of the family business and with travel. The extraordinary compendium of rare objects collected by Gaston-Louis Vuitton, grandson of Louis Vuitton, the founder of one of the world’s most famous luxury brand is seen in the new Cabinet of Wonders tome. Just in time to add to your book collection this fall.

“The fascination with ancient practices, timeless techniques, objects unique for the way they were made—and whose irregularity or imperfection itself made them admirable—and the desire to preserve these examples of a civilization facing disappearance due to the standardization of the modern industrial world and serial production, characterizes Gaston-Louis Vuitton,” writes editor Patrick Mauriès in his introduction to Cabinet of Wonders, with texts contributed by John Banville, Pierre Senges, Stephen Bayley, Alberto Manguel and Delphine Saurat.

In addition to forming his own collection of trunks—his primary motivation and one he announced publicly—Gaston-Louis’s roving eye lit upon rare antique travel articles, locks, hand tools, perfume bottles, tribal arts, walking sticks, vintage children’s toys, books, hotel labels, printed monograms, and other typographical rarities. Together they form a rich personal evocation of curiosités industrielles, or curiosities of the trade, as he liked to call them.

From Thames & Hudson USA (http://www.thamesandhudsonusa.com) this grand volume that’s illustrated with specially commissioned photographs, Cabinet of Wonders beautifully captures a life inspired by bizarre and eclectic curiosities, the height of the Art Deco period, and someone whose life was defined by the rigors and rewards of world travel.

Published on Sept, 19, 2017, the hardcover book is $95 with 316 pp and over 350+ illustrations.
