We love that The Settlement Home for Children is turning 100 years old this year and singer-songwriter Jewel will be in Austin for a performance to help celebrate the centennial year. Since 1916, The Settlement Home for children has provided opportunities and hope to children in the Austin community. Their mission is to promote healing and growth to children, young adults and families by providing a continuum of care, support and resources. The organization serve individuals with histories of abuse, neglect, and severe emotional trauma.
The very special performance will take place at The Long Center on January 10, 2016. Attendees will have the chance to learn about The Settlement Home’s 100-year history of helping youth in the Austin community before Jewel takes the stage. The performance will be followed by a Cake & Champagne Reception with Jewel for sponsors in the Kodosky Donor Lounge.
The Alaskan-born music icon overcame a rough childhood and went on to sell millions of albums and establish herself as one of the most successful musicians of her generation. Her music, and most recent album Picking Up the Pieces, conveys an unrelenting desire to share herself once more, a poet and troubadour on a lifelong journey of reflection.
Jewel’s background, her time spent homeless and her perseverance is inspiring and encouraging. Many of the children at The Settlement Home for Children come from similar backgrounds and it is always our hope to provide mentors and role models that can relate to its kids through the healing process. “Often, the children in our care are struggling with not only the challenges of being a teenager, but also with all that comes from being removed from their homes,” said Betsy Giles, Settlement Club President. “Bringing Jewel in to support our mission is an exciting way to show the children that there is hope, and they can overcome their challenges to achieve their goals.”
