We love that Turk Pipkin’s award-winning film Building Hope returns to the big screen on Saturday, September 29 with two Stateside Theatre screenings to launch the Nobelity Project’s 1000 Books for Hope book drive.

We love that Building Hope chronicles the construction of Mahiga Hope High in Kenya, and is an uplifting film for anyone who believes education shouldn’t end after the 8th grade. Winner of the Lone Star Audience Award at SXSW FilmFest, Building Hope continues to screen at festivals, in theatres and on college campuses worldwide.

The “1000 Books for Hope” book drive will provide 1,000 donated books to five different libraries that The Nobelity Project is building in Kenya as part of their ongoing Kenya Schools Fund. The book drive will also raise funds for shipping and the purchase of additional Kiswahili language books in Kenya. “Rather than stacks of old books that are no longer wanted,” says the film’s director Turk Pipkin, “we’re looking for donations of favorite books that have had great meaning in your life. Write your name, hometown, and a short note about why you love the book in the front cover. Those notes are the bridge to a world of learning and friendship for eager readers in Kenya where few communities or schools have libraries.”

The Nobelity Project’s Kenya Schools Fund ( is supporting libraries at Mahiga Hope High, the Kabiruini Girls School, Irbaan Primary, the Joe Gracey Library and Computer Lab (named in honor of the legendary Austin DJ and music producer), and for the upcoming CTC International’s Knowledge and Resource Center. These libraries will serve boys and girls, men and women, from pre-school to adult literacy.
